Magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Tibet kills 16 and collapses more than 300 homes
The deep quake struck about 400 km from Lhasa. Rescue teams and hundreds of police were sent to the epicentre.
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on Thursday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32, according to Lhasa’s emergency management bureau. As of early Friday, 11 of the injured were in serious condition.
The quake struck about 400 km from the regional capital, Lhasa, at a depth of 173 km, according to India’s National Centre for Seismology. More than 300 houses collapsed.
The response
More than 300 police officers were sent to the epicentre, and the regional fire and rescue corps mobilised 347 personnel, according to state media. Xinhua reported that damage assessment was ongoing and disaster relief under way.
The Tibetan plateau sits on the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. In January 2025, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the region killed more than 120 people.
