Chhattisgarh’s Sirpur enters UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list
The archaeological site on the Mahanadi is known for its early brick temple and Buddhist monasteries.
Sirpur, the historic archaeological site in Chhattisgarh, has been added to UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage sites, drawing international attention to its cultural and historical importance.
Sirpur lies on the banks of the Mahanadi river. It is best known for the Lakshmana Temple, an early brick temple, and for the remains of Buddhist monasteries and other structures uncovered during excavations.
What the tentative list means
A place on the tentative list is the first formal step towards World Heritage status. A country can only nominate a site for full inscription if it has first appeared on its tentative list; the nomination is then evaluated before the World Heritage Committee decides.
