India faces no U.S. pressure to cut Russian oil imports, says Hardeep Singh Puri
The oil minister says purchases are driven by discounts and pricing, as Brent trades above $110.
India has faced no pressure from the United States to reduce its imports of Russian crude, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said. He said India’s purchases are tied to discounts and pricing compared with other grades.
The comments come as oil prices climb on fighting in the Gulf: Brent settled at $113.17 a barrel on 22 October, its highest close since May. India imports the large majority of the crude it consumes, so higher prices feed quickly into its import bill, inflation and the rupee.
In Washington, Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin has warned oil companies that they will “be held accountable” if they import Russian diesel under a deal struck between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin — a sign that energy trade with Russia remains politically contested in the U.S.
